The Montana Army National Guard has a storied history dating back to its establishment in 1867. Originally formed as a territorial militia, the Guard has been an essential part of the state's defense and national service. Throughout its history, the Montana Army National Guard has been called to action during some of the most significant events in U.S. history. During the Spanish-American War, Montana Guardsmen served with distinction in the Philippines, fighting in battles that showcased their courage and resilience.
Our History

In both World Wars, the Montana Army National Guard played a crucial role. In World War I, members of the 163rd Infantry Regiment were deployed to France as part of the American Expeditionary Forces. In World War II, they fought in the Pacific Theater, contributing to the liberation of the Philippines. Fort Harrison, located in Helena, Montana, also became the home of the elite First Special Service Force, commonly known as the Devil’s Brigade. This joint U.S.-Canadian unit was renowned for its daring missions in Italy and Southern France, earning a reputation as one of the most feared forces in the war.

In honor of this legacy, the Montana Army National Guard’s Recruiting and Retention Battalion hosts the annual Devil’s Brigade Warrior Challenge, a rigorous event designed to test the physical and mental toughness of new recruits. Montana Soldiers have also served in the Korean War, Vietnam War, and global operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, providing critical support in combat, peacekeeping, and humanitarian missions. Today, the Montana Army National Guard continues to stand ready to serve both state and nation, embodying a legacy of honor, service, and sacrifice.
